Chickens will establish their "pecking order" and when new chicks come along it disrupts that order. The older ones will pick on, or even kill the smaller ones. Hens aren't as bad as roosters, but i would still keep a close eye on them. I'm not trying to be discouraging, just passing on some info i learned from raising chicks. I thoroughly enjoyed doing it.<br />The best, most consistent layers I had was Rhode Island Reds. I know it says they have a hostile nature, but in my experience with them it was only the roosters.
